We all know that in the end we are most interested in ourselves.
It begins with that powerful feeling as a small baby “I am”, “I exist”, and this never goes away.
But we also want others to think that we are interesting people.
So how do we make ourselves interesting to other people?
Ask questions about them!
We could call this a “no-brainer”.
That means we don’t need a brain to understand this.
But how often do we do it? Not often enough.
For that we need more practice asking questions.
We need to think about open questions: not questions that only require Yes or No.
“What”, “which”, “why”, “where”, “how” and “when” need to become our close friends.
I’ll blog more on questions on another day.
But in the meantime, start preparing your own list of simple personal questions for starting English-language conversations.
Here’s a list of questions for more meaningful conversations to get you thinking.
